Quarterly letter of the President - N° 1, March 2005

It is the first letter addressed to you dear readers of our site of the Arab Center for International Humanitarian law and Human Rights Education (ACIHL).

This newsletter is quarterly. It defines the activities of ACIHL members and exposes projects to be undertaken.

In addition to ACIHL objectives, and from the beginning of this year, other objectives were updated. Thus, we seek:

  • To support the European-Arabic dialogue;
  • To promote the cultural exchanges between the two sides the Mediterranean;
  • To take part in the training of those working in education and in training of the migrant workers and youth to fight against all the forms of communautarism, discrimination, exclusion, and xenophobia.

The last activities of ACIHL until December 2004 were:

1. The President of ACIHL took part in an international Conference under the topic: Power and Responsibility: The Changing Role of Non State Actors, organized by Chatham House (London) and the Royal Institute of the International Relations (IRRI-KIIB) (Brussels), November 30 and December 1, 2004 in Brussels.

2. The executive Director of ACIHL Dr. Boudjellal BETTAHAR is on mission in Saudi Arabia as of 6 December 2004.

3 The President presented an official statement in a seminar organized by the association Al-Khalil, on 4 December 2004 in Brussels. The seminar had as a subject: Islam and human right. The statement is entitled: Islamic declarations of human rights.

4. In collaboration with the Institute of Humans Rights of the Catholic University of Lyon and the Inter-Center of Messina, ACIHL organized one day of studies on the 11 and 12 December 2004 under the theme: Is the religion an obstacle for the application of human rights? The President and the Treasurer of ACIHL Miss Dina MELHEM presented two interventions during that day. The output of this day will be soon published. (You can refer to the intervention of the President, in french, entitled: The question of minorities and the rights of the non-Muslims in Islam)

5. The President presented an official statement, during a round table organized by Inter-Center of Messina, the University of Messina and the Mediterranean Network of Training and Researches on Human Rights, on 17 and 18 December 2004 in Messina (Italy). The official statement is entitled: Guaranteed rights: life, physical integrity and freedom. This round table had a topic of: The new version of the Arab Charter of the Human Rights; an Italian-Arabic Dialogue. The output of this round table will be soon published.

We count on ACIHL members, the readers of this site to enrich its content, to improve its headings and to make of it a site of reference for the activities, the activities and the specialists of the international humanitarian law and human rights.
